Features of my Desktop Environment

Filed under: requirements — Mr. Mike @ 8:00 am

I think it is important to lay out some requirements for Linux on the Desktop before I talk about how it was successful or it sucks. I’m sure I’ll miss stuff as I go down this list, but this is a sincere attempt to document what I do with my computer

IMHO, a desktop environment has at least the following features:

  • The clipboard
  • Display management
  • Window management
  • Fonts and font management
  • Printing and print control
  • Audio (multistream playback and muliple inputs for recording)
  • Program launching
  • Task switching
  • File management
  • Automation (although I don’t use it much)

In the background it provides a lot more, but from an end-user’s point of view? Does anything else matter?
